Undrafted out of Harvard in 2010, Lin played well for the Dallas Mavs in the summer league. It was the first time Kupchak attempted to pursued Lin as an unsigned rookie free agent, but Lin opted to sign with the Warriors.
2nd attempt
Warriors waived Lin. Lakers put a claim on Lin, but the Rockets were higher on the priority list.
3rd attempt
Only 2 weeks after picking up Lin off waivers, the Rockets released him.
Lakers again attempted to acquire Lin, but the New York Knicks were also higher on the priority list.
4th attempt
Finally Kupchak got Lin over to Lakers. Rockets traded away Lin, and got nothing in return to clear cap space. Lakers also received picks from Rockets.
